Also known as endodontic treatment, root canal therapy is performed to save infected or damaged teeth. During the procedure, our Baner, Pune, dentists will remove the inner portion of the tooth before cleaning the root canal and sealing it up to prevent further infection. Root canal therapy is generally no more uncomfortable than getting a regular dental filling and can be completed with the placement of a dental crown.
Here’s what else you need to know about root canal treatment:.
When Would I Need a Root Canal?
As mentioned above, root canals are intended for situations in which oral bacteria has gotten inside of a tooth. Ignored cavities and injured teeth can lead to this type of procedure becoming a possibility. Our dentists will want to address the concern sooner rather than later to avoid the development of a dental abscess.
Symptoms That May Warrant a Root Canal
If you truly need a root canal, the affected tooth will generally make it quite clear. The pain felt tends to be more intense when the infection has had time to set in and reach the tooth’s pulp (where the nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels are located).
You may need to see our dentists if you’re experiencing:
- Severe tooth pain when chewing or applying any pressure to the area
- Noticeable sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures during exposure and long after the source (i.e., food or beverage) is gone
- Tooth discoloration
- Gum swelling and tenderness
- A pimple-like swelling on the gums
We will always consider treatments like root canal therapy first but if it is determined that the tooth is past the point of saving, our dentists will have to move forward with tooth extraction. If this is the case, we’ll make sure you’re aware of what’s required.
